During spring, nature slowly wakes from its hibernation. But budding trees and blooming flowers aren’t the only things that come out of winter hiding; warm weather also brings out swarming insects. In addition to being unsettling to discover, a swarm can lead to a full-blow infestation later on down the road. To help you prevent insects from settling into your property, the experts at Eastern Pest Services explain what you need to know about pests that swarm in spring:

Common Swarming Pests in New Jersey

Most insects that swarm in the spring are leaving their homes to look for food, mate, or establish new colonies. When dealing with large swarms of insects, it can be important to know what type of pest you are dealing with. Below are some of the most common spring swarming pests and how to identify them:

Ants

Ants are known to swarm in the spring as they look to establish new colonies. These insects are normally easily identified by their thin waist and long legs. Their forewings are much larger than the hindwings and their antennae will be bent. While most people only find ants bothersome, some species – such as carpenter ants – can cause damage to your home.

Termites

Subterranean termites have a long, thick abdomen and short legs. Their large four wings are the same size, and their antenna will be straight. Most homeowners dread seeing termites near their home because they are capable of causing so much property damage. These insects are notorious for eating and burrowing into the wood structures of homes, often causing very costly damage.

Bees

Bees are often easily identified by their black and yellow stripes. They like to build their nests in any open cavity they can find from hollow trees, under sheds, in the eves of a home, or even in your home’s siding.

Wasps

Wasps will range from yellow to brown in color. They will have a long body and a pinched, small waist. You can often find wasps’ papery nests hanging from trees or the eves of your home.

Keeping Pests Out of Your Home and Yard

Keeping pests out of your home and yard is extremely important for most people. Pests are not just unsightly, they can also cause property damage or introduce unwanted bacteria into your home. Keeping swarming pests off of your property is a great way to prevent full-blown infestations. Here are a few simple ways to keep pests away:

  • Seal Entry Points: Many insects will enter your home through small cracks and holes around the perimeter of your home therefore it is important to regularly inspect your home’s exterior and seal any entry points.
  • Keep Doors and Windows Closed: An open door or window is an invitation into your house for many pests. Make sure to keep any doors or windows that do not have a screen closed to keep swarming pests from entering your home.
  • Stack Firewood Away From Your Home: Firewood is known to attract a variety of pests. It provides a perfect hiding space as well as a food source for pests like termites. Keep firewood stacks elevated off of the ground and at least 20 feet away from your home.
  • Clean Kitchen Regularly: A messy kitchen is a pest’s daydream. To ensure you do not have any unwanted dinner guests, make sure to clean any spilled food or drinks quickly and store open food in airtight containers.
  • Keep Your Yard Clean: Many insects like to hide in piles of decaying yard debris while others will be attracted to fallen rotting fruit from your trees. Be sure to collect and dispose of any yard waste promptly before it attracts any pests.
  • Eliminate Water Sources: Pest will swarm to areas that have easily accessible sources of water. Drain any standing water in your yard and fix any leaky hoses or faucets inside and outside of your home to keep pests at bay.
  • Clean Up After Eating Outside:  Insects like wasps and hornets will be attracted to your barbeque leftovers. It is important to cover, clean, and dispose of food outside to stop these stinging insects from crashing your party.
