Stink bugs are relatively harmless, but a growing problem throughout Bergen, Morris, Essex, Passaic & Somerset County. They’re small and wide with a shield-shaped body that comes in a variety of shades of brown from light to dark.

What Are the Habits of Stink Bugs?

Generally speaking, adult stink bugs usually feed on fruits, leaves, and even stems. The life cycle of brown marmorated stink bugs involves mating and reproducing. They’re usually feeding anywhere from spring to late fall. When the cold weather arrives, stink bugs are not likely to surface, as they find a place to spend the winter; usually in walls or attics. Stink bugs can cause damage to household plants. As their name implies, stink bugs will give off an offensive smell as a defense mechanism if they feel threatened or when they are squashed.

Stink Bug Habitat

As temperatures outside drop, stink bugs seek out warm places to spend their winter because they cannot survive outdoors in the cold. Attic vents, open doors, and other entry points usually provide stink bugs access to your home. They will often travel throughout the home through openings in recessed lights, vents, and other pathways as they search for food and water sources. The brown marmorated stink bug usually does not sting or bite. While stink bugs are grouped into the ‘sucker’ type of insect, they don’t use blood as a feeding source as mosquitoes do.

Effective Stink Bug Treatment

Treatments three times a year – twice in the fall and once in the spring can help to keep stink bugs out of your home and help prevent breeding. If your experiencing an infestation, treatment should be completed as soon as possible. This will ensure maximum effectiveness.

Exterior treatment includes treating around doors, windows, chimneys, and vents. Interior treatment includes treating the Stink Bugs spot on. You can opt for a one-time treatment which comes with a 30-day guarantee. However, there is a great likelihood of reinfestation, so we highly recommend an annual service plan to keep these pests out all year!
