What Attracts Rodents?

Rodents aren’t too different from any other living thing. Just like you, rats and mice are always looking for shelter, safety, food and water. So, when you think about it, it makes sense why they’d find many homes and businesses to be so appealing. With that in mind, it all comes down to a matter of convenience. We can’t suggest you keep your property completely free of food or crank the temperature so cold or hot that it renders any living being uncomfortable. What you need to do is enjoy what you have and deny access to rodents. Rats and mice, as annoying as their presence can be, are also pretty intelligent. If they establish your commercial or residential space as unreachable, they’ll move on to somewhere else. So how can we get to that point?

Get Rid of Rats and Mice Quickly!

The best way to combat a mouse or rat infestation is to keep one from forming in the first place. It’s called wildlife exclusion, and it’s a form of extermination that you can start to implement on your own. Rodent exclusion typically looks like the following:

  1. Sealing cracks and holes around the property. Rats and mice are capable of squeezing through openings as small as 3/16″ across. By filling any gaps that size or larger, you’re actively preventing entry into your home or business. You can do this using caulk, steel wool, or foam insulation. Pay special attention to areas where pipes and other utility fixtures enter the home.
  2. Storing food in airtight containers, as well as keeping garbage bins tightly closed. If rodents don’t sense an easy food source, they’re less likely to be drawn to your property.
  3. Keeping your basement, attic and crawlspace clean and moisture controlled. Rats and mice love clutter, and if there isn’t any around, they may find somewhere else to nest.
  4. Placing screens over the openings in places like your vents and chimneys. You can also make sure the existing screens over your doors and windows are kept clean and without holes.
