Deer Mice in North Jersey

Also called field mice or white-footed mice, these pests are common throughout North America – including here in New Jersey. Though they may be small and cute, an infestation of deer mice can be dangerous to human health. These tiny rodents are capable of transmitting the potentially fatal hantavirus. That said, most deer mice prefer to nest in quiet and remote areas. They are typically found outside in rural or agricultural areas. Though they may seek shelter indoors in the winter, they rarely invade residential properties.

Deer Mouse Habitat

Deer mice are nocturnal and spend the day curled up in a cup-shaped nest made of leaves, stems, and fibrous materials. The nests are lined with feathers or shredded cloth, and they’re most often located in tree hollows or beneath logs and large rocks. However, once the temperatures drop in the fall or winter, these mice may try to stay warm by sneaking into your basement or crawl space. Since deer mice do not hibernate, they may wreak havoc on your stored items, upholstered furniture, or wall voids. At dusk and dawn, deer mice feed on nuts, seeds, and berries.

Deer Mouse Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

For most of the year, deer mice stick to their remote and undisturbed nests. They’re usually only a problem once the weather gets cold, which prompts them to invade homes, sheds, or garages. If you notice deer mice on or near your property, it’s important to get help from a professional as quickly as possible. These pests may seem harmless, but they’re known for transmitting the hantavirus. Coming into contact with their carcasses or urine can put you at a huge health risk.
